Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 or HTC Touch Pro?

Posted at 2008-06-04 05:13 by Wictor Wilén in Personal , Hardware , Windows Mobile with 17 comments.

Wow, two heavy-weight Windows Mobile phones; Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 and HTC Touch Pro.

In a few months I am ready to get me a new phone. I currently use the HTC TyTN, which has been a very pleasant ride (except for the glitching screen right now, to many drops…). When Sony Ericsson announced XPERIA X1 in march I got so excited and decided to get me one as soon as it hits the stores. Today HTC announced that they will continue their Touch series with the HTC Touch Pro, another sweet dream! So which one will be mine?

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 HTC Touch Pro

Comparing them

First of all here is a comparison of some of the specifications of the X1 and Touch Pro.

SE XPERIA X1 HTC Touch Pro
Size, mm 110 x 53 x 17 102 x 51 x 18
Weight, with battery 158g 165g
Screen 3 inch
800x480
touch screen
2.8 inch
640x480 (VGA)
touch screen
Processor Qualcomm MSM7200 528MHz processor
Memory Internal memory: 400Mb
RAM: 256Mb
Storage: 512Mb
ROM: 512Mb
RAM: 288Mb
OS Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
Features XPERIA panel interface TouchFLO 3D
  Full specification Full specification

As you can see they are pretty similar in specifications and they share a lot of other common things like the camera (3.2 Megapixels), GPS etc, slide-out QWERTY keyboard. They only thing that they really differ is the screen size, a big plus for the X1 for the larger screen.

The main difference is the interface, on top of the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS; TouchFLO 3D vs XPERIA panel interface. HTC’s TouchFLO is the favorite here. But I have not yet seen or tested the XPERIA interface yet.

So, by looking at the hardware XPERIA would be my winner and if I look at the software Touch Pro will be in my pocket (I will not carry them in the quite nerdy leather belt clip coming with these phones).

I will wait out the first reviews after the product hit the shelves and run down to the store and touch them – one of them will be mine…

Why not iPhone 2.0 some of you might think? First of all I have not seen the specifications (coming next week I guess). Second: I don’t like the methods Apple use to lock in developers and forcing them to sell their products through their channels so Apple can steal percentage of your income. Third: I don’t think that iPhone 2.0 will be ready for business usage, i.e. no central administration, no QWERTY keyboard etc.

Which phone is your dream come true?

#  I am torn (and thank goodness for that!) by Jon Deutsch
Screenshot from websnpr I love the fact that -- finally -- there are two innovative WinMo-powered options coming to the market in 2008. I am frankly torn: I love the idea of the Xperia's screen size and S-E design ethos. But that Touch Flo GUI is pretty stellar, and much more robust and deep than XPeria's panel GUI (or so it seems). The fact that slide-out keyboards are taking off is stellar, but I want manu's to get them (much) slimmer than either of these two options. In the end, both of these show that Microsoft should stick to "back end" development and let the market innovate on the front-end. MSFT (outside of XBox, Zune, and Meida Center) have never been good front-end developers. And these two WinMo mobiles show that others are just much better getting a strong foundation and running with it.

Screenshot from websnpr I agree completley with you. I really hope that the Xperia interface is more than just a flip-3d/alt-tab function for WinMo. TouchFLO has been around for a while and are probably more tested and have more features - so right now I lean towards getting me a Touch Pro.
#  Tried by Peter
Screenshot from websnpr I'm just so tired of that WinMo operating system. It's just the little things that makes it virtually unusable. It's insane that SE and HTC has to spend millions of dollars developing an entirely new interface on top of it, in order to make it appealing. I'm not going to buy WinMo next time.. Maybe they'll get it right in version 7 or 8, who knows?

Screenshot from websnpr Heya Peter, I agree with that WinMo is not that perfect out-of-the-box. But I think that Windows Mobile as a platform is great and extensible
#  ouch pro vs. X1 by Gerd A. Zimmermann
Screenshot from websnpr X1 has the better radio - all of it and no differences by countries, the angeled screen seems to be the better choice. Will get it asap

Screenshot from websnpr Yes, I think since SE has specified and designed the hardware for X1 (HTC will manufacture the X1), it might turn out a real good mobile phone product. The phone part is HTC only negative experience of my TyTN compared to previous phones (it's not bad - it could be better).
#  cheaper by E
Screenshot from websnpr i will get whichever one is cheaper. They are both really nice phones with pretty much the same specs except a few things

Screenshot from websnpr Depends on how much the difference is...

Screenshot from websnpr I set my heart on Xperia...until the Diamond Touch Pro came along. I am currently using the Touch, and frankly life's hard without a keyboard (even a mini one). Now, I wonder when it will start selling in Singapore.

Screenshot from websnpr I talked to our phone salesman and he currently do not have any ETA or price for any of them (in Sweden), as soon as I get some news I'll share 'em.
#  ETA by Wictor
Screenshot from websnpr The Touch Pros are now popping up in stores for preorder here in Sweden. Netonnet.se states that they will have it on the 18th of august.

Screenshot from websnpr The X1 has a standard headphone jack... extra points there. But the Pro has video out (with adapter)... extra points for that too.
#  Headphone jack by Wictor
Screenshot from websnpr Yes, this is a bonus. But I use bluetooth stereo headphones so that's not a big issue for me. Recieved my Touch Pro a weeka and a half ago, and I am so pleased with it. I sureley hope X1 turns out to be a good phone, for the sake of Sony Ericsson.
#  xperia by richard bown
Screenshot from websnpr I have an xperia x1 used to have a nokia n95 and what an improvement. Faster, much more powerful and stable platform. If it's the interface you are after, there is a touchflo port to the sony. I have installed it, but am using the installed SPB interface instead. Only thing that lets the xperia down is the camera, but I only use it for quick snapshots, i have a dedicated digital camera for holidays etc. My advice - try the sony in a shope first, as it's not to everyones taste, but personally, i love mine!
#  My Xperia Experience by Dower
Screenshot from websnpr I'm like Richard, I just upgraded from my Nokia n95 to the Xperia, and I'm discovering some annoyances. First off, the speaker is weaker, and can easily be covered up. The n95 had two huge speakers on either side of the handset. Although voice calling with Bluetooth was weak on the n95, it was at least present. The camera on the Xperia is also a letdown from my n95. But the keyboard is top notch, and the software suite in WinMo is better. I've actually started a blog/site dedicated to my experiences with mobile devices, since I'm not a pro reviewer, I hope to share some of my insights for people. Pop over to http://www.inputfreak.com.
